The survey ranks CEOs in terms of power they wield in corporate India, and the country's economy at large. Here we bring to you the tech CEOs who form an important part of the list.
NR Narayana Murthy
The most powerful tech CEO on the list is NR Narayana Murthy, Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies (ranks at third position on the India's 100 Most Powerful CEO's list). Murthy founded Infosys in 1981 along with six other software professionals and served as the CEO for 21 years before handing over the reins of the company to co-founder Nandan M Nilekani in March 2002. Under his leadership, Infosys was listed on NASDAQ in 1999. He served as the Executive Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor from 2002 to 2006. Murthy is the recipient of numerous awards and honours. The Economist ranked him 8th on its list of 15 most admired global leaders in 2005. He was ranked 28th among the world's most respected business leaders by The Financial Times in 2005. With a net worth of $12.5 billion, founder, chairman and group CEO of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Bharti Mittal is the next most powerful technocrat on the list (ranks at fourth position on the India's 100 Most Powerful CEO's list). Sunil started his career at a young age of 18 after graduating from Punjab University and founded Bharti, with a modest capital, in the year 1976. Bharti AirTel is today one of the country's leading private integrated telecom company. The company's other businesses include communication & media devices (Beetel), life insurance venture with AXA of France (Bharti AXA), and a joint venture with the world's largest retail company Walmart. Over the years, Bharti has grown successfully in partnership with various leading companies of the world like Singapore Telecom, Vodafone, Warburg Pincus and British Telecom. Next most powerful techie on the Most Powerful CEOs list is Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro Group (ranks seventh on the overall list).A graduate in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, US, Premji took on the mantle at Wipro at the age of 21, after the sudden demise of his father in 1966. Under his leadership, the fledgling $2 million-hydrogenated cooking fat company has today grown into a $1.76 billion IT Services giant with customers across the globe. He has been among the Financial Times list of top 25 billionaires who have done most to bring about significant and lasting social, political or cultural changes. Time listed him amongst the 100 most influential people in the world in April 2004. In 2003, Fortune named him among the 25 most powerful business leaders outside the US. The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education have both conferred honorary doctorates on him. He is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Committee for Trade and Industry. In January 2005, the Government conferred upon him Padma Bhushan, the one of the highest civilian award.
Nandan M Nilekani

A Tata Group veteran, Ramadorai has been with TCS for over 30 years. Joining the company as a trainee engineer, he took over as CEO in 1996 and has been instrumental in building TCS a $3.02-billion global software and services company. Under his leadership, TCS became the world's first organisation to achieve enterprise-wide Maturity Level 5 on both Capability Maturity model and People Capability Maturity model frameworks in 2004. Ramadorai is a member on the corporate advisory board of several academic institutions.
